Naruse-Ouka Elementary is a new variation of an elementary school hybrid with a community center and resilience hub, and was the winner of a design competition sponsored by Higashi-Matsushima town in 2017.
This project combines two elementary schools which were destroyed in the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. It is the final elementary school in the area to be rebuilt after students have been learning in temporary structures for the past 11 years. The design enables the traditional disciplinary education of Japan while also challenging those norms and opening up opportunities for more creative and informal modes of learning.
In the event of a disaster, the building transforms into its secondary purpose as a hub for resilience. This functional and symbolic resilience built into the architecture will help restore a feeling of peace and security to a community that has been in a transitional mode for the past decade.
The building is also designed as a community hub, both for now and future anticipated population decline of the children attending the school. Currently it works both as a school and a community center, with a diagonal axis that separates functions and allows them to coexist without interrupting each other. The spatial adjacencies are planned in a way that allows community functions to gradually take over a part or all of the building over time as the population ages, turning into more of a community-oriented space for meetings, workshops, coworking and adult education.

高瀬川を望む坂戸キャンパスの中心部に位置する城西大学薬学部新棟は、隣接するセンタープラザの中心である象徴的な図書館棟と共鳴、互いに強化するようにデザインされた。また、本建物は、他の建物群の後ろ側に位置し、反対側で隣接する薬学部１８号館と接続され、１８号館をセントラルプラザに結びつける役割を持つ。エントランスタワーは、垂直性を強調されて、図書館の塔状のデザインと連動し、エントランス内部のアトリウムは、柔らかい光で満たされた、学びの場所にふさわしい空間となっている。１階から４階までは大階段で結ばれ、講義室が配されており、そのうえの３層は、薬学部のラボやセミナー室が置かれている。南側のファサードは、連結する１８号館の律麺を踏襲したデザインとしており、講義室やラボの窓からは、高瀬川や周辺の山並みの眺めを望むことができる。

Situated in the middle of the Sakado campus and visible from across the Takase river, Josai University’s new Faculty of Pharmaceutical Science building is designed to resonate and strengthen the symbolic library building tower while interfacing the central plaza. The building also acts as a connective node to an existing pharmaceutical science building (Bldg.18) hidden behind other existing campus buildings and gives it interface.
An entry tower that emphasizes verticality respects and relates to the adjacent Library tower, while the inside atrium provides a gentle lightwell appropriate for a learning environment. The first four stories of the building feature lecture halls and is connected by a grand staircase, while the three top floors features pharmaceutical department labs and seminar rooms. The façade to the south also resonates with the façade of the building 18, while the fenestration provides a view of the Takase river and the surrounding mountains from the lecture halls and labs.

臓器移植研究の先駆者として知られるテラサキ・リサーチ・インスティチュートの新しい本部として改修された既存の建物。オフィス、研究所、コラボレーションのための多目的スペースを備えた合計1４４０平米の施設を設計した。研究施設でありながらイベントやアウトリーチを通してパブリックとの交流の機会を増やしたいという施主の意志にそって考慮されたデザインとなっている。 隣接する大通り、ウエストウッド・ブルバードに面した地上階には、ファサードに面した書店と読書スペースをふくめた、幅の広い通路のような多目的スペースが建物の全長を貫いている。パブリックとのつながりを強化したいという施主の思想にそって、地上階には様々な透過性を設け、ストアフロントをとおして外部から内部にアクティビティを引き込むような構成にした。内部の空間は、オフィスやサポートスペースで囲まれた二つの吹き抜けを中心として構成されている。吹き抜けの上部には、軽量のテンション構造で支えられた半透明の二重の膜屋根で覆われている。この膜屋根を通すことで、自然光をその下の多目的スペースに柔らかく分散し、人工照明を最小限におさえた心地よい空間としている。二つの吹き抜けの真ん中には、中心の穴をとおして空が見える鏡面仕上げのスピンドル状のオブジェがあり、周辺の風景を反射して、外部に向けて全く窓のないこの空間内部に映し出し、町と内部空間を結びつける。

An infill project for the new headquarters of the Terasaki Research Institute, the 15,500 sf. facility accommodates offices, laboratories, and multipurpose spaces for collaborative work, within an existing shell. The Institute, a pioneer in tissue typing research, endeavored to establish a new facility to enhance and expand their community outreach efforts by providing new opportunities to engage the public.
The interior spaces have been arranged around two atria which are enclosed with a translucent double membrane structure, supported by a lightweight tension system. Office and support spaces are clustered around the atria and collaborative spaces are directly underneath the membrane. Both enjoy diffuse daylight that minimizes the reliance on artificial light. Two mirror finish oculi at the center of the atria provide a clear view of the sky, as they reflect the surrounding skyline into the space.
A wide corridor like multipurpose space, that includes a bookstore and reading room, extends from the primary façade along Westwood Blvd. through the entire length of the ground floor. In line with the Institute's mission of engaging the public through various events and outreach efforts, the building layout reinforces this mission by accommodating varying degrees of permeability along the ground floor, that invites activities along the store front to extend into the building.

坂戸キャンパスの南東端に位置し、メインアプローチから良く見える場所に建設される城西大学の新しい薬学部棟は、キャンパスへの目印そしてゲートウェイとして機能します。この９階建ての建物は、キャンパスの全体をつなぐ連続性と空間の結びつきを強化したいという大学の要望を具現化するべくデザインされました。ファサードに沿って視覚的に、そして効果的に採用された水平方向のモチーフは、キャンパスの新しいアイデンティティ醸成の手がかりとして、将来の開発の数々にも用いられることを意図したデザイン上のジェスチャーです。薬学部棟は、全長約95m、北端の幅17m から南端の幅11m に狭められる11,000 ㎡の中に、教室や研究室、教職員のオフィスなど様々なプログラムを収めています。
コミュニケーションとコラボレーションを向上させるために構成された様々なプログラムは、典型的な実験室に用いられる孤立した「サイロ」のような配置を避け、隣接するスペース間の接続性と透明性を優先したより現代的な構成としています。
将来予定される増築棟と合わせることで、学生と教職員との間のインフォーマルな集まりや、コラボレーションを促進する、多様なアクティビティに開かれた多くの共用エリアが加わります。こうした新しい建物たちは、城西大学の創造的なコミュニティの為のアクティブなプラットフォームとなるでしょう。

Situated at the South East end of the Sakado campus, and visible from the main approach, Josai International University’s new Faculty of Pharmaceutical Science Building will serve as a beacon and gateway. The nine story structure will be a set piece in realizing the University’s ambitions to strengthen architectural continuity and connectivity across the campus. The horizontal motif, prominently visibly along the façade, is a gesture towards this initiative, which is intended to coalesce future developments as it will help define a new identity for the campus.
At approximately ninety-five meters long, and pinching from seventeen meters wide at the North end, to eleven meters wide at the South, the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences contains various programs through its eleven thousand square meters. Program areas include classrooms and laboratory spaces, as well as faculty office areas.
The various program areas, organized to increase communication and collaboration, eschew the ‘silo’ approach typical to the laboratory typology, in favor of a more contemporary organization that prioritizes connectivity and transparency between adjacent spaces.
Together with the planned 06B building, the new ensemble will contain numerous unprogrammed common areas, intended to encourage informal gathering and collaboration among students and faculty. These new buildings will become an active platform for the creative community of Josai University.

城西大学創立五十周年を記念して設計されたこの記念館は、講堂、多目的スペース、キッチン、オフィス、ファウンダーズルームから構成される多機能な建物です。坂戸キャンパスのシンボルである“城西の森” のふもとに位置し、この森との共生を重要なテーマにデザインされました。低く優雅なアーチを描く屋根は、建物高を最小限に抑えつつ、丘の地形をなぞるような形態をもちます。この屋根の下で、三つの異なるレベルのテラス状の空間が斜面に沿うように、南側に位置する森の緑への眺めを切り取って借景とする広大なアトリウム空間の下に広がります。
記念館の建築デザインは、このキャンパスのコンセプトである自然環境と人工環境の間の調和のとれたバランスを体現し、キャンパスを取り囲み、その内部にも広がる自然景観と、キャンパスの建物群による人工の景観を結びつけます。
記念館で最も重要な空間はファウンダーズルームです。メインアトリウムに隣接した天井の高い空間に、 日本の戦後史と共に歩んできた、創設者水田三喜男の生涯と大学の歴史を、写真や映像などの各種展示物を通じて再現します。

Commissioned to mark the 50-year anniversary of Josai University’s founding, this multi-function Memorial Hall includes an auditorium, pre-function area, kitchen, offices and a founder’s room. Situated at the foot of Josai Hill, an important symbol for the campus, a key concept was developing a solution which would be in symbiosis with the hill. A low slung, gently arched roof mimics the topography of the hillside and minimizes the height of the building. Underneath the roof, three terraced levels follow the sloping terrain to create an expansive atrium space with framed views out of the forest to the South.
The architecture of the Memorial Hall bridges the natural landscape, which surrounds, and winds its way through the campus, with the landscape of campus buildings; striking a harmonious balance between the natural and built environments.
A key space in the Memorial Hall is the Founders Room. A double height space, set adjacent to the main atrium, which outlines history of the University along with the storied life of its Founder, Mikio Mizuta, through photos, artifacts and motion graphics.

The goal for this programmatically complex academic facility was to develop a clear organizational strategy that would maximize flexibility, promote interaction between the various academic departments and allow for a high degree of permeability across the site. In order to accomplish this, a series of slender overlapping volumes were arranged along the length of the site.
The space between each volume is a shared atrium. The atriums provide opportunities for students, staff and faculty to cross paths and congregate while simultaneously mediating the interior environment by regulating airflow and day lighting.
The slender volumes maximize views towards the urban and natural preserves and act as boundaries that define large exterior plazas as well as a sequence of interconnected plazas in between the building volumes. The plazas create intimate areas for congregation, define distinct entry courts for each department and provide connections to the larger network of open spaces around the campus.

ミネソタ州セントポールに位置する３M本社の改装計画は、人々の交流を促進させコミュニティをより活性化する場の創造と空間を通じた３Mのブランド価値の発信を目指している。＜移行空間をコミュニケーション空間へ＞ 本社ビルは 、中央の駐車場を囲むように配され, ２階のレベルで周回する廊下で結ばれた５つの建物からなる。 この計画では、個人作業の場である細分化されたオフィス空間には手を触れずリング状の動線空間に沿って、 各部局の境を超えて各種の集まりや、共同作業を醸成しうる様々な場を戦略的に配した。通常のデスクワークから、休憩時の雑談の間に存在しうる様々なコミュニケーションのあり方に対応した、場の数々が全体を一周する動線上に置かれている。＜建築空間と情報空間との融合＞本計画では建築空間と情報空間を、 コミュニティの活性化を図る器としてむしろ重なり合って補完し合うように扱っている。回廊各所に分散配置された、コミュニケーションハブにおける従業員同士の対話と共同作業は、 社内の情報•メッセージを発信し続けるスクリーンや、共同作業のためのタッチスクリーンテーブル、特別に開発されたインターフェイス、３Mのグローバルネットワークを通して、世界中で働く従業員を結ぶ ソーシャルネットワークなど、各種の情報技術によって強化されている。

Atelier Hitoshi Abe (AHA) was invited to develop a master plan to re-invigorate and modernize key campus facilities and spaces for a Fortune 500 Company Headquarters based in St. Paul,MN. The main quad of the existing campus consists of a 15-story tower constructed in the early 1960's and three low rise structures constructed in the early 1970's. All of the buildings are connected by a second level sky-way, and are sited along the perimeter of a central parking lot.
The planning and layout of the existing structures followed the prevailing principles of office culture at the time of their construction, consisting of highly compartmentalized spaces organized to maximize spatial efficiency and functionality. In order to balance these spaces with the demands of a contemporary creative office, AHA developed a master plan in which select spaces, programmed for communication and collaboration, were strategically inserted in key areas of the quad to encourage informal congregation, discussion, and foster collaboration among various departments. These open collaborative spaces have been largely consolidated in transitionary areas of the campus, not normally considered useful or functional in the workplace, but where more often than not highly productive informal discussions occur. Len-tic-u-lar-is：強烈な風が荒れた地形や山の上や周辺を吹き抜けるように、高地で発生するレンズ形状の雲の形成。湿気と風の変化と下の荒れた地形との間のこの緊張は、無数の大気現象を生み出しますが、しばしば顕著な対称性、一時的な滑らかさ、透明性を特徴とする非常に特殊な正式な効果です。各雲の形成は、特定の瞬間における大気条件、地形と特定の場所の地形との間の対話のユニークな視覚的指標である。この意味で、レンズ雲は空と地面を仲介し、それらを結びつける。
SCI-ARC Galleryに出展したのは、イサム ノグチがデザインした日系文化・コミュニティセンタープラザの軽量屋根構造の1：7スケールモデルです。この広場のために、ノグチは周囲の街並みから隔離された禅庭により独特の風景を作りました。しかし、コミュニティにとって非常に重要な場所であるこのプラザは、ロサンゼルス特有の気候に曝され、さまざまな活動を行う事ができないでいる。プラザを囲む壁はそれを近所から隠し、街に見えないようにします。
市街地へのプラザの存在を表現する気候的避難所を設けることにより、コミュニティのためのプラザの機能的および象徴的価値を高める屋根を提案。これを実現するためには、ノグチの禅園に触れることのない大規模な屋根がプラザの上に浮かび、ノグチの地形をロサンゼルスの空から隔離することはできません。
提案されたスキームは、概念上、自転車の車輪のように振る舞う非常に軽量な膜構造である。このレンズ雲(Lenticularis) の巨大な屋根は188フィートに及んでおり、ノグチのプラザに触れずにプラザの表面の半エーカーをカバーすることができる50フィートのオーバーハングを含みます。これはプラザの範囲外にある4組の柱で支えられた500フィートの長いリングビームで構成されています。リングビームから伸びる56本のテンションケーブルが中央のスプロケットに集められ、鏡面研磨されたステンレススチール製のパネルが表面に「クラウドスコープ」を形成しています。クラウドスコープは、空に対して視覚的な透明感を与え、プラザのユニークな断面プロファイルは、空と地形の両方を反映し、それらの境界を融合させます

Len-tic-u-lar-is: A lens-shaped cloud formation that occurs at high altitudes as strong winds blow over and around rough terrain and mountains. This tension between moisture, changing wind conditions, and the rugged terrain below produces a myriad of atmospheric phenomena, but a very particular formal effect characterized by often striking symmetry, ephemeral smoothness and transparency. Each cloud formation is a unique visual index of the dialogue between atmospheric conditions, geography and the terrain of a particular place at a particular moment in time. In this sense, lenticularis mediates the sky and the ground, and unites them.
Exhibited at the SCI-ARC Gallery is a 1:7-scale-model of a proposed light weight roof structure over the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center Plaza designed by Isamu Noguchi. For this Plaza, Noguchi created a singular landscape inspired by a Zen-garden that isolates itself from the surrounding townscape. However, the Plaza, which is a very important place for the community, is too exposed to the climate of Los Angeles to host various activities; and the walls which enclose the Plaza conceal it from the neighborhood and make it invisible to the city.
A roof is proposed to enhance the functional and symbolic value of the Plaza for the community by providing a climatic shelter expressing the existence of the Plaza to the urban condition. In order to accomplish this, what needs to be realized is a large-scale roof floating above the Plaza, which will not touch Noguchi’s Zen-garden, nor will it isolate Noguchi’s terrain from the Los Angeles sky; but instead mediate them.
The proposed scheme is an extremely lightweight membrane structure that behaves, in concept, like a bicycle wheel. This lenticularis-like giant roof, spans One-hundred and eighty six feet and includes a fifty foot overhang that makes it possible to cover half an acre of the Plaza’s surface without touching Noguchi’s Plaza. It consists of a five-hundred and twenty foot long perimeter ring beam supported by four sets of columns that fall outside of the extents of the Plaza. Fifty-six tension cables extend from the ring beam and are gathered at a central sprocket, surfaced with mirror-polished stainless steel panels creating a “Cloud-scope.” The Cloud-scope provides visual transparency towards the sky and enhances the openness of the Plaza, while its unique sectional profile reflects both the sky and the terrain and fuses the boundary between them.

AHA was invited by The Make It Right Foundation, a collaboration between actor Brad Pitt, Graft Architects, Cherokee Gives Back and William McDonough + Partners committed to, building 150 energy efficient, solar powered, storm resistant homes in New Orleans Lower 9th Ward, a neighborhood wiped out by Hurricane Katrina and the breach of the Industrial Canal levee.
AHA's proposal, Hot Links, offers many different options for smart living. Through the inherit flexibility of its organization, this house can accommodate many arrangements of single family, multiple family, renter and tenant and live/work arrangements.
Two shotgun houses are linked together and able to open, close or share the space between. In this way, much larger open spaces are created for private bedrooms or public living spaces. The flexible boundary between the residences can be soft and adapt the changing needs of a family throughout the years. The array of 45 different plan options gives families the freedom to adapt their living size to their economic situations with little cost. If an owner desired a single family house, they can choose from a three, four, five or six bedroom house. If even more space is required, opening up the attic and using it as loft space is also an option. If an owner’s family required less space, they can split the residence into a duplex, granny-unit or a live-work unit to enable to growth of a small business. Owners are able to re-create and customize their living situations as needed. The economic benefits of a flexible structure also translate into ecological benefits of a re-usable or re-purposed structure.

The extensive renovation of Tohoko University’s main Auditorium, was completed to coincide with the universities 100th anniversary. The existing Auditorium, built 50 years after the founding of the school, was transformed into a shoe-box style auditorium with a seismic retro-fit and upgrade to all technical systems.
The refurbished auditorium has become one of the new centers on campus and has served as a catalyst for ongoing cultural development within the adjacent community.

A multi-tenant building for which the interiors were to be determined following construction of the core and shell and base systems, the project was designed to maximize spatial variety. In order to accomplish this, a secondary circulation system was developed whereby voids were used to connect the spaces of each floor in a looping spiral arrangement, resulting in a multiplication of potential routes, vertically and horizontally, to each tenant space.

Located in a small town on a hilly site with a view of the Pacific Ocean, this private gallery is intended to permanently display eight sculptures. Rather than a developing a "white cube", the gallery was designed as a unique landscape, where specific spaces designed to accommodate a single sculpture are aggregate within a predetermined 10m x 12m x 10m volume. The architecture was inspired by the delicate structure found in the boundary between soap bubbles, which are formed by the internal pressures that when aggregate cells are confined within a larger boundary.

The program for this project included a new pediatric clinic for young professional couple as well as a house where they could raise their young children. The pediatric clinic is located on the ground floor, with the family's common spaces on second floor and private rooms on third. The family's common spaces, positioned in the heart of the building, are enclosed by a terrace/garden which acts as a buffer from the bustle of the surroundings and allows the spaces to open up to the exterior. The floating third-floor volume has the same proportion as the ground floor but includes large vertical perforations that bring daylight to the second floor from a variety of angles.

身体は、今のところ、人間が環境と直接対話できる唯一のインターフェイスである。制度やプログラムといった概念のフィルターを通して建築を捉えることは、単にあらかじめ決められた意味を追認していく作業であり、身体を通して「場」の意味を読み解く行為とはなり難い。一方、建築の身体性／カタチは、たとえプログラムやコンテクストは剥ぎ取っても、そこに存在するだけで身体と対話し「場」の意味生成に作用することができる。ここでは、未発表作品を含む６つのプロジェクトを採り上げ、これらにおけるカタチのエッセンス（壁／面のタイポロジー）をフラグメントとして切り出す。来場者は、プログラム、テクスチャー、スケール、環境から切り離された建築の断片が生み出す新たな空間に向かい合うことになるだろう。この展示はシミュレーションやりプレゼンテーションではなく、身体とカタチとの直接的な対話の場である。

By inserting an inner wall made of thin perforated steel plates within a French restaurant that faces Jozenji street in Sendai city, a soft boundary is created that mediates between the first and second floors of the existing building, and links the inner space of the restaurant with the space defined by the famous roadside zelkova trees that symbolize Sendai.

A project for an office and factory for the production of prostheses, contained on a typical flagpole-shaped site. The building is organized around a central 6m x 6m x 6m glass box floating in midair. All sightlines are focused towards the resulting interior courtyard, ensuring spatial continuity and reinforcing the sense of a shared space between the office and factory employees. Exterior load bearing walls tracing the site boundaries and extend to the maximum permissible height in order to provide flexible column-free interiors and maximize floor area. The exterior structural walls of precast concrete are stacked and then post-stressed, resulting in a checkerboard arrangement between the structure and windows.

仙台駅から東へ４kmの位置にある卸町は、昭和40年にできた東北・北海道で最大規模の流通業務地区である。さまざまな物資の流通のためにつくられたこの街は、骨太のインフラが通り、いろいろな倉庫が並んだ独特のランドスケープを持っている（われわれクリエイターにとってはすごく魅力的な！）のだが、卸業の業態の変化につれて流通の結節点としての役割が薄れ、今、新たな方向性を模索している。
2002年、阿部仁史アトリエは卸町の倉庫に移転した。われわれの活動がこの場所をプラットフォームにして展開していくことによって、新たなアクテイビィティを生み出し、街に新しい可能性と活気を生み出せると考えている。この街で、働き、友人たちと集おう。デザインの行為がいつか街のアクティビティになり、デザインのコミュニティが街のコミュニティとなって、われわれは都市と一体になるだろう。
この宮城県美術館でのインスタレーションは、アトリエの移転の際、倉庫にもともと大量に残されていたパレットを、展示室の中に並べ替えただけのものである。このインスタレーションは、眼差しの再構築をデザインすることで、既存のものに新たな価値を見い出す卸町の街づくりのコンセプトを表象している。

The aim of this project was to create a compact, high-efficiency box which combines the functions of a public auditorium and a community center in the same space. This overlap of the program increases spatial efficiency and yet each function only becomes apparent when necessary. The resulting volume consists of one large open area, in which the main activities are housed, and a collection of smaller volumes along the perimeter to accommodate ancillary functions.

The typical stadium typology is based on a geometry of concentric circles derived from the basic function of gathering spectators and establishing a central point of focus. This geometry creates a strong sense of enclosure but also separates spectators from their exterior surroundings. In order to take advantage and connect spectators to the park-like setting of the site on the outskirts of Sendai, Miyagi Stadium combines the distinct typologies of a stadium and park, weaving them together to create a multifaceted facility.

昭和8年築の旧米蔵を展示施設に改修する計画。展示スペースに利用される既存米蔵部分に設けた鉄骨の構造体は、既存部の耐震性を確保すると共に展示スペースを区分し、２層にわたる回遊空間を構成している。既存部と対峙する開放的な増築部は石蔵と町の幾何特性を調停するように歪められ、双方を結ぶ媒体の役目を果たしている。

松島湾に面して建つ公園管理事務所と艇庫の複合施設。艇庫の効率を高めるために細長い形状となった建物のデザインは、この場の性格や諸機能の持つ特性をそのままランドスケープに映し出すように、1枚のリボンをひねって表裏を反転させた構成に翻訳され、場の状況を映し出す第２の地形を生み出している。

この橋のデザインは敷地の状況を構成する見えないルールを浮き上がらせることによって形態をつくり出している。あらかじめ定義された変形の規則に従って、ちょうどハードル走者がハードルを乗り越えていくように、それらの状況を飛び越え潜り抜けるこれらのエレメントの軌跡が橋のカタチになった。

このプロジェクトは国定公園である宮城県蔵王町遠刈田郷の敷地面積約2万坪、一級河川の流れる豊かな自然環境に囲まれた老舗旅館のリノベーションである。新たに外資オーナーが取得した建物は、もとの風情を残しつつ、耐震改修、設備更新、温泉や外構の整備、ホテル機能の再構築、新たなデザインとホテルスタイルの運営を導入することで、現代的なスパリゾートとして再生したプロジェクトである。

The project was a renovation of an established, historical ryokan (a traditional Japanese inn) acquired by a foreign investor, situated in the beautiful natural environment of Zao national park. The vast site spans 16 acres, featuring a major river that runs through it. We transformed a traditional ryokan into a contemporary spa resort by pivoting towards a hotel-style operation with a new design, while retaining the elegant character of the existing ryokan. To support the transition, the building was updated structurally and mechanically, while adding a new onsen (Japanese style hot spring) and re-organizing the hotel functions.

敷地は誰でもが知っている歴史のある街の中心部にあって、未だ自然に恵まれたサンクチュアリのような場所である。里山の麓であるため、隣地と繁がる東側と勾配のあるアクセス道路がとりつく北側の一部を除けば、周囲は北と西にある下りの法面、南側の頂きに向かう切り立った崖とに囲まれている。こうした地形的な制約、それに伴う法規的な制約、そして風致地区、埋蔵文化財保護地区、その他指定区域に重複して指定されていることによる様々な規制など、通常の敷地に比べ遥かに多い外からの条件づけが構成する場にこの住宅は在る。
施主の基本となる要望は、主寝室となる和室の他に夫婦それぞれの部屋を設けることとゲストルームは２つ、隣接してバスルームを設けること、ダイニング、キッチン、リビングはそれぞれから独立して設けること、パーティー程度の大人数に対応できるものであること、全体で5〜60坪程度であることなどである。それぞれに独立した室の集合でありながら、全体に連続性のある空間が求められた。
この住宅の独特の形態も、内的条件がソリッドなヴォリュ−ムとヴォイドが交互に結ばれた鎖によって置き換えられ、この鎖が輪を作ってコモンスペースを生み出すようにしながら、外的条件のランドスケープに置かれることで生じたものである。内部空間はこの内と外との条件の対話を映し出す、形態化した記録である。

The site is situated in the heart of a well-known historical city. Compared to ordinary housing sites, a considerable number of requirements define the organization of this place, including topographical conditions and legal restrictions, along with other regulations pertaining to the fact that the area has been designated as Preservation District for Buried Cultural Assets. The client`s requests included separated private rooms for the husband and the wife apart from their Japanese-Style main bedroom, two guest rooms, bathrooms adjacent to each room , independent among dining room, kitchen, and living room, a space for accommodating large gatherings, and a total area of about 165-200m2. A single, continuous space was also called for. Thus the internal requirements being replaced by a linked chain of alternate solids and voids. This chain forms a ring to create common spaces, and is then placed amongst the landscape of external requirements.
